Title: Trust Computation in Online Social Networks

Abstract: With the emergence of Online Social Networks (OSNs), user-generated contents and interactions have dominated the Internet’s activity and the questions of whom and what to trust have become increasingly important. Trust computation in OSNs can be applied in various applications such as wireless vehicular networks, device-to-device communication, and opportunistic networks. Although there are many definitions on trust, we define trust as the probability that a trustee will behave as expected by a trustor. This general definition of trust makes it applicable for a wide range of applications.

It is a challenging problem, however, to model and compute trust in OSNs due to the difficulty of handling complex OSN topologies and conducting accurate assessment. To address these challenges, we define trust propagation and trust fusion in OSNs by proposing the three-valued subjective logic (3VSL). The 3VSL model distinguishes prior and posterior evidences in trust, and differentiates between distorting and original opinions, so it is able to compute trust in OSNs with arbitrary topologies. We theoretically prove the capability of 3VSL based on the Dirichlet distribution. Furthermore, we evaluate the correctness of 3VSL by a numerical analysis and a validation against a real-world OSN dataset. Both numerical and experimental results show that 3VSL is accurate in computing trust in OSNs.
